2:00 Goal Finish Time

Karen Thernka

My name is Karen Thernka.  I have the great honor of being the 2:00 hour pacer for the Urban Cow Half Marathon!!  I am thrilled to have this opportunity and to share my love of running with others.  Just a little fun & personal facts about me:

As a child, I would run around everywhere…inside, outside, grocery stores, church, etc.  Yep, in the blood from early childhood.  I always wanted to run a marathon.  I fulfilled this goal when I joined Team in Training in 2001 and ran the California International Marathon.  When I crossed that marathon line, I was addicted and couldn’t wait to sign-up for the next adventure!

Since 2001, I have run 15 half marathons and 45 marathons (including 5 Boston Marathons).  Additionally, I have grown a love for trail running.  I have completed approximately 35 ultra-marathons on trails (distance over 26.2 miles).   I am happy and crazy enough to say that 4 of those events were 100 mile distances.  I love Tahoe and have completed the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 miler 3 times.  I hope to run it again!!

I feel I was “Born to Run” as I just had a love for it since I can remember. My strength, motivation, and inspiration comes from those who I run “in honor of” and “memory of.”  I have lost friends to cancer and I feel their spirits with me when I am running events.  Additionally, I am the proud mom of a child with special needs.  My daughter, Olivia, almost did not survive her 1st year of life due to her disabilities.  However, Olivia is a very strong, feisty and courageous little girl.  She is 6 years old now.  I remember her courageous nature on all my running journeys.
